COASTAL CARPET PYTHON – (Morelia Spilota McDowelli) COASTAL CARPET PYTHON – (Morelia Spilota McDowelli)

Value Vivariums would like to thank Robert D. Gilbert, and www.reptilekeeper.co.uk, for the following information:

Habit

Coastal carpet pythons inhabit the eastern coast of Australia; they live mainly in heavily forested areas over a large area of eastern coastal and central Queensland, They are the largest of the carpet pythons and can reach an average adult length of 6 to 9 feet. The head is noticeably wider than the neck. They are relatively quiet snakes with beautiful patterns.

Housing

As carpet pythons are semi-arboreal it is best to house them in a taller vivarium. Two sub adult pythons should be housed in a vivarium that is 6'H x 3 ½'W x 2'D. There should be a few branches, enough to support the weight of the snake and they should allow the snake to get to the basking spot at the top of the vivarium. The temperatures should be between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day with a basking spot temperature of 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit and drop the temperature by 5 to 10 degrees for night time. The substrates that can be used are newspaper or bark. It is best to put a hide area in the vivarium. Carpet Pythons love to curl up inside a hollow log.

Feeding

Coastal carpet pythons do very well on a diet of appropriately sized mice or rats. They will take pre-killed and thawed rodents very easily. Ensure that there is always fresh water available and that any faeces are cleaned out immediately.
