Saturday, March 6th, 2010

When you see these innovative vivariums you wonder why no one has done it before.

Simply buy the first unit and then add on to whatever size you want in 3’ sections which easily connect together.

This means that you no longer have to start with one vivarium and after a year buy a bigger one, then later on another etc., etc.

Now you can start with the starter unit which is available from ValueAquatics in two sizes the MODX24 which is 3’ x 2’ x 2’ (LWH) and the MODX36 which is 3’ x 3’ x 3’ (LWH). Then as your reptile grows simply add on the 3’ extensions to whatever length you require, very simple and easy.

The MODX vivariums and Extension packs all come in three colours Ellmau Beech, Winchester Oak and Tobacco Walnut to suit your décor.

This great idea now solves that problem of the big guys your African Rock or your Tegu that needs to be given a new vivarium every year now, it saves you time and importantly money.

Exo Terra Water Well – Water Dispenser

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

ValueAquatrics offer these excellent water dispensers by Exo Terra are an excellent idea for giving your animal water. In a vivarium water evaporates quickly due to the surface area of the water bowl and water bowls can be easily tipped over not to mention being fouled. The Exo Terra Water Well gives your snake, lizard or tarantula access to fresh clean water. Inside the resin rock there is a reservoir that holds the water and supplies the well at the front with a supply of fresh water. The small well at the front prevents animals from fouling the water and a screen stops insects or very small reptiles getting into the reservoir. The exo Terra Water Well is made of very strong resin and is a natural rock finish making it very natural looking in any vivarium or terrarium setup.

Excellent source of clean water
Less likely to be knocked over
No fouling of the water
Naturalistic look
Very easy to clean and fill

NEW AX VIVARIUM & CAX CABINET RANGE

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

ValueAquatics are pleased to announce the NEW AX Vivariums and CAX Cabinet range from Aquapac.

Aquapac have redesigned the AX Vivariums for arboreal reptiles which like to climb rather than being at ground level. The AX range is available in three sizes AX24, AX36 and the AX48 all are 2’ deep by 4’ high.

Because of the size of these vivariums a central rail that divides the glass pains giving two glass sliding doors at the top and bottom section. This offers better access to the bottom for cleaning etc.

A divider will be available shortly so that you can turn the vivarium into two the top section into an arboreal vivarium and the bottom into a standard type vivarium.

The CX cabinets have also been re designed and are an open shelved unit with no doors for ample storage and measure 465mm (18.6”) wide

Lamp Guards for Ceramic Heat Emitters

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Here at ValueAquatics we are always trying increase our stock for our customers, and we have just got in stock some Heater Guards for the Exo Terra Ceramic Heat Emitters. They come in two sizes medium and large so they can be used for spot bulbs and Infra Red bulbs as well.

I can not state too highly the need to use guards especially for Ceramic Heat Emitters, Infra red heat bulbs and incandescent spot bulbs. All these get very hot and will burn badly anything that can touch them. I know it is an extra cost but put that against the cost of vet bills not to mention the animals well being the extra is worth it.

The guards are simple to fit there are various ways the easiest is to just screw it in place in the vivarium (screws not included).

Available in any colour as long as it’s BLACK.
Large 23.5cm x 12cm x 12cm (9.4” x 4.8” X 4.8)
Medium 16cm x 11cm x 11cm (6.4” x 4.4” x 4.4”)

Zoo Med Lamp Safety Covers

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

ValueAquatics now have in stock the Zoo Med Clamp Lamp Safety Covers. These wire mesh covers clip onto the front of the Clamp Lamp to stop the animal from burning itself on the Bulb or Ceramic Heat Emitter. Snakes are most prone to this and can wrap themselves round the bulb etc., Royal Pythons seem to be attracted to the heat source probably due to their heat receptors. Also Reptiles do not seem to feel pain until it is too late and the damage is done.

ValueAquatics now offer the Zoo Med Clamp Lamp Safety covers to fit the 14cmØ, 20cmØ, and 25cmØ Exo Terra Clamp Lamps and the Komodo 14cm and 21cm Black Dome Ceramic Lamp Holders.

With the vast majority of heat sources a heater or bulb guard should be used as a matter of course for your animal’s safety and vet bills.

Exo Terra Wire Light

Friday, February 12th, 2010

All heat sources in a vivarium should be guarded with one exception heat mats which should be on a thermostat as a safety precaution.

ValueAquatics offer the Exo Terra Wire Light which is designed for their Ceramic Heat Emitters, Mercury vapour Lamps and incandescent spot bulbs. These wire lamps do not allow heat build up as in reflector type holders but the heat is lost sideways.

These holders should not be confused with bulb safety cages and should not be used with snakes and small lizards which might get through the wire to the heat source. Ideal for tortoise and larger lizards like iguanas and monitors.

Comes with a ceramic Edison screw fitting
Two sizes up to 150watts & up to 250watts
6 foot of cable
Manual on/off switch

Which Thermostat do I use?

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

People are often confused with the different types of thermostat and their application, so I’ll try and explain them here,

A thermostat does two things, it keeps the Vivarium or terrarium at a specific temperature via a heating source, and it is a safety device ensuring that the heater does not overheat and possibly catch fire.

When keeping Reptiles, amphibians, tarantulas we need to keep them at species specific temperatures this is where thermostats come in. We heat the vivariums in basically 4 ways bulbs, ceramic heaters, heat mats (including tube heaters) and aquarium heaters for turtle’s salamanders and some other amphibians.

Aquarium heaters mostly come as a heater thermostat combined so we will not discuss this as our main interest is in the dry thermostats.

At ValueAquatics we offer Thermostats by Komodo and Habistat. They are both well known and respected companies and have been making high quality products for many years.
What type of thermostat do I need?

Simply it depends on the heating source so we will start with the most popular the Heat mat. ValueAquatics recommend the Habistat Mat Stat (maximum load 100w) or the Komodo (maximum load 300w) habitat thermostats. Both are typically an on/off switch type and will control the temperature of the heat mat. Both calibrated in Fahrenheit and Celsius. Setting them up is very simple just follow the instructions that come with them. With heat mats lay or fix the thermostat probe on top and in the centre of the heat mat then put the substrate on the top, no more than about an inch thick.

Also used with greenhouse tube heaters and cable heaters.

For heating with bulbs (incandescent and infra red) use a Dimmer type thermostat, that is one that slowly turns up and down rather than on or off. Similar to the light dimmers or rheostats in your home. This prolongs the life of the bulbs element and controls the heating ability of bulbs much better.

The Habistat dimming thermostat comes in two types a standard dimming and a day/night dimming thermostat. The Habistat dimming thermostat requires a minimum load of 40watts but a maximum of 600watts /230volts.

The Habistat Day/Night Dimming Thermostat is the same as the standard dimming thermostat but will allow for a drop the night-time temperature when attached to a timer.

Heating with ceramics use Habistat pulse proportional thermostat this supplies the power to the ceramic heater in regulated pulses giving a very accurate temperature. They greatly improve the life of the element as the heater rarely needs to run at full power. Controls heaters up to 600watts

Calibrated in Fahrenheit and Celsius

Habistat also do a Habistat Day/Night pulse proportional thermostat works in the same way as the standard pulse proportional thermostat but will allow for a drop the night-time temperature when attached to a timer.

ValueAquatics offer two other Habistat thermostats the Habistat Temperature Thermostat which is a standard on/off type for heat mats, tube heaters, cables with a maximum load of 300w.

The Habistat Twin Thermostat is simply two on/off thermostats in one box. It is perfect for controlling two heaters separately to give a specific temperature gradient… For heat mats, tube heaters, cables where the maximum load is 300w on each heater.
